In the heart of the Alps since 1895

The Chemnitzer Hütte, also known as the Nevesjochhütte, is located on the Nevesjoch in the southern Zillertal Alps — a place where stillness and vastness meet, framed by the rocky giants Großer Möseler and Hoher Weißzint.

Built in 1880 by the Taufers section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club, the hut was handed over in 1894 to the Chemnitz section, which built a new structure the very next year. Since then it has proudly borne the name of this Saxon city.

Today managed by the Gruber family, the hut welcomes hikers, mountaineers and mountain bikers from mid-June to mid-October — warmly and with South Tyrolean hospitality.

Accommodation

You can find all the key information about your stay here at a glance!
What makes the Chemnitzer Hütte special?

We have been a family-run business since 2001. Our hut is a simple, rustic mountain refuge that conveys an authentic alpine feeling. A night with us is a real experience for young and old alike.

When is the hut open?

We welcome our guests from the beginning of June to mid-October.

What about meals?
  • Kitchen: We offer traditional home-cooked dishes. For hungry hikers, hot food is available throughout the day.
  • Half board: This includes a 3-course dinner (with a small selection), overnight accommodation and breakfast.
  • Vegetarians: A vegetarian option is no problem — just discuss this with us on your arrival.
  • Dinner: To promote a sense of community, we serve dinner for all overnight guests at 7:00 pm.
What sleeping options are available?

We have approximately 50 sleeping places in total, divided into:

  • Four four-bed rooms
  • Three dormitories with 10 to 12 beds each
What do I need to bring for an overnight stay?

As we are a mountain hut, for hygiene reasons it is mandatory to bring your own sleeping bag liner.

Is there a shower in the hut?

Yes! After an exhausting tour, you can look forward to a hot shower.

Are dogs allowed in the hut?

Overnight stays with dogs are possible, but ONLY with advance notice and subject to availability (as places are limited). Please let us know in good time!

How can I make a reservation?

Reservations by e-mail or telephone.

If you have difficulty reaching the landline, please call via WhatsApp: 0039 335 6898111.

History

1880
The first shelter, the Nevesjochhütte, is officially opened in August. In just three weeks the DuÖAV Taufers section builds a small accommodation. In the valley the hut is known as the 'Heang Hitte' (meaning 'Gentleman's Hut' in the local dialect).

1894
Fourteen years later the Taufers section was forced to hand over the shelter to the DuÖAV Chemnitz section for financial reasons. This section built a new structure next to the old hut: the Chemnitzerhütte.

1895
The new hut is inaugurated on 27 July.

1914-1918
During the war years the Chemnitzerhütte suffers the same fate as the other shelters: unmanaged, abandoned, looted and left to decay.

1926
After expropriation, management of the Chemnitzerhütte is handed over to the CAI Milan section.

1950
Thanks to the active support of the local population, the hut is restored by the Milan section.

1999
Together with 24 other state-expropriated shelters, the Chemnitzer Hütte passed into the ownership of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol.

2015
Since 2015 the Province of South Tyrol has been supported by a joint commission in managing the hut.

Geology / Glacial Polish

Geological highlight: Research at the foot of the glacier

Beneath the impressive Neves Glacier lies an extremely interesting research area that fascinates not only experts. The unique rock formations and traces of glacial history make the surroundings of the Chemnitzer Hütte an outstanding open-air laboratory.

Easily accessible and worth seeing: You don't need to be a professional mountaineer to discover the geological treasures. The terrain is easily reachable and offers impressive insights into the Earth's history.

International meeting point of science: The significance of this area is underlined by the renowned 'Summer School'. Every two years, international geologists come here to research together and exchange ideas about the special features of the Neves Glacier.
